SOY & CATTLE COMPANY SCORECARD

Mighty Earth’s Soy & Cattle Company Scorecard evaluates 10 major meatpackers and soy traders based on how well they respond to early warnings of deforestation in their supply chains, and their deforestation- and conversion-free commitments. The Scorecard assesses seven of the largest soy exporters by volume in Brazil: Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (ADM), ALZ, Amaggi, Bunge, Cargill, COFCO International, and Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC), and the three largest Brazilian meatpackers: JBS, Marfrig and Minerva.

Deforestation alerts are submitted to these companies periodically through Mighty Earth’s Rapid Response Deforestation Monitoring program. Mighty Earth encourages a ‘Rapid Response’ from companies, urging prompt and transparent action in addressing instances of deforestation or human rights violations in their supply chains.

Note: Deforestation is defined as any land use change classified as loss of native vegetation, including fires, by deforestation alert systems. See Mighty Earth’s Soy & Cattle Tracker and Scorecard Methodology 2024 for full details.

Companies are scored out of 100 points across four categories: Responsiveness, Transparency, Action, and Deforestation- and Conversion-Free Policy. Each category has ten points available, and scores are awarded based on the number of deforestation cases linked to each company. Data is exclusively from Mighty Earth’s Rapid Response – Monitoring Deforestation in Brazilian Supply Chains program. The Scorecard will be updated periodically.

Last updated:  December 2024.

Companies are ordered by the number of hectares of deforestation we found associated with their supply chains.  The deforestation data is sourced from the cases documented in Mighty Earth’s Rapid Response – Monitoring Deforestation in Brazilian Supply Chains reports (December 2023 to December 2024) and AidEnvironment’s Realtime Deforestation Monitoring (RDM) reports (February 2022 to June 2024). The Tracker is based on reported cases, capturing only a fraction of the broader deforestation crisis across Brazil. Deforestation cases are selected based on a range of criteria, including factors such as the magnitude, timing, and location of deforestation, evidence of supply chain connections, and proximity to Indigenous Lands.

Deforestation is defined as any land use change classified as loss of native vegetation, including fires, by deforestation alert systems. The Ranking will be updated periodically.
