SOY & CATTLE DEFORESTATION MONITOR

DEFORESTATION TRACKER

The Soy & Cattle Deforestation Tracker exposes the connection between major global meatpackers, soy traders and deforestation in Brazil.

The Tracker summarizes the amount of deforestation and conversion potentially linked to each company, based on cases of reported deforestation by Mighty Earth and AidEnvironment between 2022 and 2024.  These figures represent a snapshot of the extensive destruction happening across Brazil, which is far greater in reality.

Beyond the Tracker, companies are scored against how they respond to deforestation in their supply chains, as part of the Soy & Cattle Company Scorecard.

DEFORESTATION MAP

The Soy & Cattle Deforestation Map pinpoints the location of farms where recent deforestation, land clearance or fires have been confirmed by satellite imagery, as detailed in Mighty Earth’s “Rapid Response – Monitoring Deforestation in Brazilian Supply Chains” reports.

The Map provides additional information, including supply chain links with major global meatpackers and soy traders, the area of forest cleared, and whether the deforestation is driven by beef or soy production. Mighty Earth urges companies to ban or suspend supply from these farms involved in deforestation.

RAPID RESPONSE

Mighty Earth’s Rapid Response program, in partnership with AidEnvironment and Repórter Brasil, monitors recent deforestation in beef and soy supply chains in Brazil with the aim of moving the companies involved to halt deforestation, degradation and conversion in its early stages. Real-time deforestation alerts are confirmed using high-resolution “Before” and “After” satellite imagery and on-the-ground investigations across the Brazilian Amazon, Cerrado and Pantanal.

When deforestation is found in the supply chains of 10 major meat and soy companies, alerts are urgently filed with them, their retail customers, and financiers to push them to act fast to prevent hundreds of hectares of deforestation becoming thousands.

ACTIONS REQUIRED BY SOY & CATTLE COMPANIES MUST TAKE

Commit to Zero Deforestation

Immediately implement a Zero Deforestation and Conversion (ZDC) policy covering both legal and illegal deforestation and conversion for all natural ecosystems, including a 2008 cut-off date for the Amazon, and no later than 2020 for all other regions.

Ban Deforestation

Ban or suspend all direct and indirect suppliers involved in deforestation or ecosystem conversion, human rights violations, or violations of the rights of local or Indigenous communities.

Ensure Full Traceability

Achieve 100% traceability for cattle and/or soy direct and indirect suppliers to the farm level, in all natural ecosystems and including third-party certification.

Publish Grievances

Disclose complaints regarding all forest-risk commodities through a public grievance tracker, in a timely and transparent manner, including the status of investigations.

Reduce Climate Impact

Publicly disclose climate footprint, including greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1, 2 and 3), methane reporting and animal slaughter figures, alongside reduction targets and plans in line with the 1.5°C Paris Agreement.

Remediate and Restore

Conduct or support restoration or full compensation for past deforestation or ecosystem conversion and provide just and fair remediation for any adverse human rights impacts linked to the supply chain.
